A little guidance
From your first journal entry to a saved Watch ride, find the next step for the device you are using.
Sign in with the same account you use on iPhone. The web Journal shows manual sessions and uploaded Watch rides from that account. The iPhone Journal also shows Watch recordings received by that phone while upload is pending or needs a retry. Choose Log session to add details and active gear from your garage. New sessions are private.
Open a journal entry to review its details, recorded gear and media. Uploaded Watch rides also show saved route and measurement data when available. These owner details stay out of ordinary public session pages. Use the Edit session section to change details. Saved ride recordings remain separate from your manual notes.
For an uploaded ride with an original recording available, choose Download recording on its detail page. This owner-only export includes exact locations and health readings, so keep your downloaded copy private.
Delete asks for confirmation. Restore deleted rides in More lets you bring a session back privately, with its media, gear history and recording. Restoring never revives a revoked sharing link.
Pair your Watch with your iPhone in Apple’s Watch app and sign in to the same Foil Is Life account on iPhone. The iPhone Watch tab offers Connect Watch when account linking or direct-upload approval still needs setup; an already approved Watch does not need to repeat guided setup. The phone can guide consent and approve the matching Watch request. If that cannot finish, manual setup remains available: start Connect direct upload on Watch, complete its Clerk verification prompt, then compare the separate eight-character Watch pairing code and approve the matching request in iPhone More → Watch → Connection → Connected Watches or web More → Connected Watches. A saved phone link alone does not confirm direct-upload approval.
Choose a ride type and start recording on Watch. Allow the relevant Location, Health and Motion permissions. Finish and save the ride. An approved Watch can upload over its own connection; phone transfer is another path when both apps can communicate. Once uploaded, the saved ride appears in your private web journal. Available readings depend on permissions and supported sensors.
On iPhone, open More → Watch → Display layout. Its live Watch preview shows the first ride page and both Map metric slots before you apply a change. The default is Map first with Speed and Heart Rate. Choose Map or Metrics first and choose the two Map readings, then apply to sync the layout to Watch. Speed units follow the iPhone display-unit choice. A pending change is not yet active on Watch; check for the Watch acknowledgement before relying on the new layout. This device setting is available on iPhone.
Map, Metrics and scrollable Controls are available during a Watch ride. The Map starts close to your location. Drag it to explore the route and turn the Digital Crown to zoom. Swipe horizontally on the bottom readings to switch pages. Long press Map or Metrics to open Controls with a tap on your wrist. Tap X in Controls to return directly to Map; on supported Watch models, Double Tap can activate that action. Lowering your wrist keeps the selected page in a reduced-luminance presentation; raising it restores that same page. watchOS controls the display and Always On depends on your Watch and system settings. Water temperature and depth appear only on supported hardware with a fresh valid reading; an unavailable or stale reading is not shown as a measurement.
Watch More → Pending rides shows rides still waiting for a server receipt, including retry states. A confirmed receipt hides a ride from that pending list without deleting its local recording bundle. Upload normally starts automatically when Watch has access. On iPhone, open Watch and choose Check Watch to ask the reachable Watch for a fresh count of rides still waiting for a server receipt. Zero means all rides are synced; a positive count offers Transfer to iPhone as a fallback. If Watch is unavailable, the count is unknown, not zero, and the last successful check time may be shown. Use iPhone Journal to review uploaded rides and recordings received by the phone that are waiting, uploading or need a retry. The web Journal shows a ride only after upload receives a server receipt. The website cannot inspect a ride still saved only on Watch or iPhone.
The browser lists and revokes direct Watch upload access and reviews uploaded results. It can manually approve a fallback request after you match the code on Watch. Watch pairing, guided consent, sensor recording, HealthKit permissions and connection resets run on your Apple devices. Revoking a Watch stops future direct uploads immediately but keeps rides already in your journal. Saved rides on the Watch are not visible to the website until uploaded.
Finish and save the ride on Watch, then check its upload status there. Direct upload normally retries when Watch has internet access and an approved request in Connected Watches. On iPhone, Check Watch asks for the current waiting count; if rides are waiting, use Transfer to iPhone as a fallback while both apps can communicate. An unavailable Watch cannot confirm that the queue is empty. Refresh your web journal after upload completes; the website cannot inspect rides that remain only on the Watch.
Use the account that recorded the ride. Changing accounts does not transfer ownership of saved recordings. Approved Watch access is server authorization, not proof that the Watch is currently online. Last server contact in Connected Watches reflects Watch contact, not local pending rides.
Loading account history, saving edits and uploading media on the website need an internet connection. Reconnect and retry the failed action. Offline recording and downloaded ride details are supported by the Apple apps; the website does not provide offline recording.
Open your session and find the Images section to manage its photos and videos. Select files and wait for each upload to finish. Open a photo to inspect it; videos use browser playback controls. Playback support depends on your browser and the recorded file format.
Watch rides with valid GPS readings show their saved route. Use the map controls to explore and fit the route. Gaps and pauses break the track. A manual session can have an exact pin without a recorded route. Map imagery needs an internet connection.
Photo capture time and coordinates are proposals until you confirm them. A named spot, exact session coordinates and recorded route are separate details. Check your sharing choices before exposing exact locations.
Add equipment with its brand, model and size in My Garage. No catalog match or approval is needed to save gear or attach it to a session. Setups let you reuse a group of gear.
Retire gear when you stop using it; restore it to select it for new sessions again. Changing or retiring gear does not rewrite a published session’s recorded gear snapshot.
Product details and reviews are available through gear linked from shared sessions. Contribute a product sends a suggestion for moderation. This is separate from adding equipment to your private garage.
Open Edit profile from More or your avatar menu to edit your profile and selected avatar. These selected profile details are public. Use Sign-in & security in More to manage sign-in, and your avatar menu to sign out.
More → Display units offers metric and imperial measurements. Speed can follow that choice or use km/h, mph or knots independently. The website stores these preferences in this browser. iPhone display units are managed in its app, and Watch speed units follow that iPhone choice. Configure the Watch ride layout on iPhone in More → Watch → Display layout.
New sessions are private. Publishing is an explicit choice for each session. Exact session and photo coordinates appear publicly only with your exact-location consent. Recorded routes and health readings stay out of ordinary public session pages.
Share ride can grant read-only access without publishing the session. Choose 24 hours, seven days or indefinite access. Exact location and route, original photos and videos, and ride metrics are three separate choices that start off. Metrics sharing includes available heart rate and other recorded measurements, but no coordinates by itself. Heart-rate route colors require both metrics and location. Original files may contain embedded location and capture details.
Anyone holding a ride link can forward it or save its contents. Turn sharing off to revoke the link. Changing saved sharing settings creates a new link and stops the old one. Revocation cannot remove copies that someone already saved. Deleting the session revokes its link permanently, even if you restore the session later.
Your entire garage, notes and personal gear photos are owner-only. Publishing a session shows only that session’s recorded brand, model and size, with confirmed catalog links when available. Your public profile and selected avatar are visible to visitors; other profile photos remain private.
